Class 4/29/09
In tonight's class we continued with several more Web 2.0 presentations including Engrade, Voki, Flickr, EtherPad, Mixbook, and SlideShare. All of these applications have educational uses, but as a future elementary school teacher I was particularly interested in Engrade, Voki, and Flickr. Engrade would be a very easy and convenient way to keep an online gradebook, calendar, and attendance log for my class. It can also be easily shared with parents so that they know what is going on in their child's class. Voki.com would be of great interest to elementary-age students because it allows you to create avatars that resemble yourself, others, or even famous people. Young children would find the characters a particularly entertaining and fun way to receive educational information. Lastly, Flickr would be useful in an elementary classroom, particularly for visual learners, to show students pictures of places, people, or things so that they have a mental image to take away from a lesson or activity. We ended the last class by viewing several of the podcasts created by fellow classmates. All of them were extremely well done and fun to watch!

Class 4/22/09
Tonight's class covered the topics of Scavenger Hunts and Webquests, although we only had time to do the several web 2.0 presentations that were scheduled for tonight. There were presentations on Google Docs, Wikispaces, Spelling City, Zoho Challenge, Hot Chalk, Google Earth, and Ask500People. All of the above applications would be very useful in my future classroom. Particularly, I think that Spelling City, Google Earth, and Ask500People would appropriate for elementary-aged students. Spelling City was very interactive and educational to help young students who are developing vocabulary and working on spelling. Google Earth was also interactive and great for young students who may not be able to visualize a specific place that they are learning about unless they can physically view it. Lastly, Ask500People would be very interesting to young children in order to get opinions or take polls because they are able to communicate and receive responses from around the world.
Although we did not have time to discuss Scavenger Hunts and Webquests, we were told to review the powerpoints on our own. Afterwards, we completed a Scavenger Hunt activity. Both Scavenger Hunts and Webquests are very valuable in the classroom. We learned that they can be used to introduce a lesson, during a lesson in order to learn more about a specific topic, or to conclude a lesson and review material. Scavenger Hunts and Webquests are very interactive and engaging for students. Fortunately, they can be adapted to be used with any age student on any topic or subject matter. Furthermore, they allow children to explore the internet on their own and "investigate" in order to find information. I will definitely use both Scavenger Hunts and Webquests in my future classroom.

Class 4/8/09
Today's class was cancelled due to teacher illness, therefore we had a webinar and watched a teacher-made video on the topic of Interactive Whiteboards. The video walked us through the basics of using a Promethean Whiteboard, one of several types/brands available. Prior to the video I reviewed the powerpoint on Interactive Whiteboards available on Blackboard. The powerpoint explained what an Interactive Whiteboard is and the rationale for implementing it in a classroom situation. It also touched on the required components required to utilize a Whiteboard. Lastly, the powerpoint described various interactive and noninteractive uses of Whiteboards in the classroom. Also as a homework assignment we were asked to research different companies that manufacture Interactive Whiteboards and fill out a corresponding chart on the method of interacting, software used, and unique features.
The information learned in today's class is definitely useful. Since I do not yet have teaching experience, I have not come in contact with an Interactive Whiteboard or had the opportunity to use one. Although, I have heard about them from friends and classmates that are teachers and they have all said how incredibly useful and engaging they are. Learning about Interactive Whiteboards is important because the school I eventually teach in may have them in the classroom. Therefore, I will already be familiar with them and be able to incorporate their use into my lessons. Even if the school I teach in does not have Interactive Whiteboards, knowing about them and their many uses may be beneficial in encouraging the school to purchase and install them into classrooms. I feel that Interactive Whiteboards are fun and beneficial to any grade level, particularly elementary and special education students which I intend to eventually teach.

In today's class we learned about Podcasts or Digital Storytelling. First we learned what digital storytelling is. It is a unique way for a person to digitally convey a personal story using narration and images and is usually set to music. The final product is about eight minutes or less in length. We also learned some elements of good storytelling and were given several links to websites of digital storytellers where we could find numerous examples of podcasts. Next we learned many programs and tools we can use to create digital stories. Finally, we learned the basic steps to follow in order to create a podcast of our own. Also in class we experimented with a program used to create podcasts and demonstrated its many features using an example podcast on astrology.
What we learned in today's class will be helpful in the future for several reasons. Since we have an assignment in which we have to create our own podcast, we will definitely be using the information learned today in the near future. Learning about podcasts and digital storytelling will also be helpful in my future classroom as well. Digital storytelling is a great way to engage children in a lesson and a unique way to deliver information rather than the same old lecture, worksheet, or notes.
Furthermore, it is not just the teacher who can benefit from podcasting because students enjoy it as well. There could be a project or assignment for students to create their own digital story, just as us graduate students are doing for this class. Digital storytelling allows for much creativity and is probably more appealing to students than an essay or other mundane assignment. Also, as learned in class, podcasts can be shared on the internet with a variety of people. Therefore, children can publish their work online to show to friends, parents, or other relatives. Bringing up a podcast on the computer at home to show a parent is a little different than bringing home a physical book with pictures and text that tells a story. Digital storytelling seems to be an easy and fun way to integrate technology into the classroom.

Class 3/25/09
In today's class we learned about educational software. Today's class was very engaging and interactive. We spent the majority of the class discussing and then experimenting with popular educational software, most of which is available for free online. We discussed Timeliner, Inspiration and Kidspiration, Puzzlemaker, Student Certificates, Internet4classrooms, Teachertube, Tux Paint, and more. We learned about each of these programs unique uses including making a timeline, concept mapping, making a word search or crossword puzzle, creating awards, brainteasers, jeopardy games, educational videos, image creation, and more. Next we spent a good amount of time experimenting with several, if not all, of these educational programs in order to see how they are utilized and how useful they can be. We also did an activity that required us to brainstorm what we liked or observed about the software and discussed educational uses for it and how we may incorporate the software into our classrooms.
The information learned tonight is immensely beneficial to any teacher, young or old, just beginning or years in. The software we learned about makes the classroom a fun and engaging place which helps reinforce content and guarantee knowledge and learning rather than simple memorization for a test. The software is also helpful because it makes the classroom interactive for students and gets them involved in the material and with each other. The educational software discussed is the type of thing that may save a child from falling behind or help them to see the bright side of learning and school. I know that I will be using several of the tools discussed in today's class in my future classroom.

Class 3/18/09
In today's class we learned about how to create a webpage. We learned reasons for creating a webpage and the educational uses of a webpage. We also learned several tips for actually creating a webpage including proper image use and display, programs to use when making a webpage, and how to publish a site. Furthermore, we learned important design rules for a webpage including appropriateness, placement, consistency, usability, and currency. All of these factors affect the appearance of a webpage and its usability which will in turn affect the users of the site- both how they interpret the webpage and how often they actually end up using it.
The information learned in today's class will come in handy in the future for several reasons. First of all it greatly helps in completing the webpage assignment required for the course. This assignment in turn will be helpful because we are creating a site so that we will be able to use it in the future for either professional (i.e. job interview) or educational (i.e. classroom) purposes. A creative, useful, and well-designed webpage can be very useful in my future class. For example, a webpage can be used to keep students up-to-date with what is going on in the classroom. It can serve as a reminder of homework assigned or upcoming projects and events in the class. A webpage can also be used to direct students to specific material on the web or create easy access to desired information. Lastly, a webpage can serve as a form of communication between teachers and parents. Just as a site can keep students informed, it can also alert parents about what is happening in their child's academic life and link them to useful resources. A webpage can also provide parents with information about the teacher and ways to contact him/her. Having the knowledge to create a useful webpage is practically a necessity in this technological age.
